Campus Conversation at Round Rock
ACC President/CEO Dr. Richard Rhodes and members of the Board of Trustees presented updates and answered questions about the state of the district at the June 27 Campus Conversation. The event took place at the Round Rock Campus, Building 8000 social staircase. Students, staff, faculty, and community members also had the opportunity to meet Tracie German, the new Round Rock Campus campus manager, and Amanda Dean, the district's to zone. The questions asked from the audience focused on the issues of transportation, food access and insecurity, child care, and the reuse of space on campuses.
College, Career, & Technical Conference for Teens in Foster Care
The Support Center hosted 80 high school youth currently in the foster care system for the second annual statewide Teen College, Career, & Technical Conference on June 20 and 21 at Eastview Campus. The students were able to experience and learn about college and opportunities available to them after high school, and heard from keynote speaker Stacy Johnson, a former foster care youth who founded Central Texas Table of Grace, a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, food, and a healthy environment for children who are displaced. Teens also attended workshops and a resource fair with more than 30 community resources for students who are in the foster care system and took part in fun activities.
Exercise Science Program receives accreditation
ACC's Exercise Science Program is the first in the state and fifth in the nation to be awarded initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in the area of Personal Fitness Training. The program underwent a rigorous self-study in the fall semester and, in the spring, an on-site visit from a team representing the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences to earn this outcome. Juneteenth celebrations
ACC held its annual Juneteenth celebrations Friday, June 14, and Wednesday, June 19, at Eastview Campus to commemorate the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. The celebrations featured live music, vendor booths, games, and fun activities for all ages. Watch the Facebook video here.
Apple/ACC partnership for teacher coding
ACC partnered with Apple to launch the Austin Teachers Coding Academy, a weeklong training program that prepares teachers for app development using Apple Swift code. Local K-12 teachers, mostly from schools with a high number of disadvantaged students, learned new coding skills to incorporate into their curriculum.
Riverbat Paddle Battle raises $10,000
American Constructors presented a check for $10,000 to the Austin Community College Foundation at the June 3 Board of Trustees meeting. The money raised at the 2019 Riverbat Paddle Battle event supports ACC students through scholarships, apprenticeships, and workforce development.
