Donations are now being accepted for Austin Community College’s annual luggage drive benefiting students transition from foster care.
“Being a foster kid has many challenges that other kids often don't experience. When you are shuffled from place to place, often your entire life lives within a plastic garbage bag. It’s tough,” says Corey Benbow, ACC transfer student. “It may seem simple, but getting a suitcase meant more to me than I can describe. It gave me a place of my own to pack my things. It gave me a sense of pride and security.”
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to donate pieces of luggage for teens who are graduating from high school and leaving foster residences. Monetary donations also are accepted.
“When graduating foster care, you are sent out on the streets with just trash bags,” says Steven Christopher, executive director of special populations. “Each donation gives them a little extra help as they begin this next chapter.”
ACC has collected 362 pieces of luggage and $4,684 for foster care alumni students since its first luggage drive in 2009.
Donations are requested by May 9. Ways to donate:
Drop off new luggage (carry-on, rolling duffels are preferred) with a foster care alumni campus champion or with the ACC Police Department.
Donate funds online (credit/debit card) through ACC Marketplace.
Donate by cash, check, or credit card at any ACC Cashier Office. Code: FCARE
Please contact Marie Ostermeir at 512-223-2545 if you have any questions regarding luggage you want to donate.
